Chapter 15: Ihuk: A Time of Renewal, Transformation, and a Journey Towards the Future
Lyn Risling (Hupa/Yurok/Karuk) came from a family, starting with her grandfather, David Risling Sr., who has been deeply involved with renewal of culture and ceremony. At a young age, she was taught songs and learned about the dances of her tribal cultures and participated in dance demonstrations. When she was older she finally had the opportunity to dance in a real ceremony when her grandfather became involved in bringing back the Brush Dance and the World Renewal ceremonies at Katimiin, the Karuk Center of the World. Since then Lyn has continued to be involved in ceremony and other aspects of her cultures. She and her husband, Julian Lang, were instrumental in bringing back the Karuk Ihuk ceremony and work to keep it going into the future. Lyn is also an artist whose art focuses primarily on her cultures and can be seen throughout local communities and beyond.
