Chapter 17: Utilizing Art to Preserve Our Way of Life
Dr. George “Pordie” Blake (Hupa/Yurok) is a world renowned artist known for his sculptors, jewelry, regalia, and contemporary works. He is skilled in feather work, regalia, and elk horn carving. Dr. Blake is one of the few remaining carvers of the Yurok Dugout Canoe. He is a recipient of the National Heritage Fellowship, the highest honor of traditional artists. Dr. Blake is a graduate of the University of California at Davis. He has utilized his artistic skill to preserve traditional ways of the Hupa and Yurok and has taken the opportunity to share this skill with young people. He received a Doctor of Humane Letters from Humboldt State University in 2016.
